The First Book Of Urizen by William Blake
May 16, 2012, 9:26 pm by * imarion posted in Ebooks » Fantasy , Views: 22 , Rate: 0 - 0

SCREENSHOT
The Book of Urizen is one of the major prophetic books of the English poet William Blake, illustrated by Blake’s own plates. It was originally published as The First Book of Urizen in 1794. Later editions dropped the word “first”.

The book takes its name from the character Urizen in Blake’s mythology, who represents alienated reason as the source of oppression. The book describes Urizen as the “primeaval priest”, and describes how he became separated from the other Eternals to create his own alienated and enslaving realm of religious dogma. Los and Enitharmon create a space within Urizen’s fallen universe to give birth to their son Orc, the spirit of revolution and freedom.... read more

Think of stadium rock in the 1980s and one band instantly springs to mind: Guns N’ Roses. Spurred by an egotistical frontman – and three indisputably excellent albums – the band rocketed to stardom and a life of sex, drugs and rock and roll. As with so many bright stars, the Gunners burnt out almost as quickly, enjoying only five years at the top. Their hedonistic lifestyle defined them, but, ultimately proved to be their undoing.

A product of the Los Angeles rock scene, Guns N’ Roses was born in 1985 as the amalgam of two existing bands: Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns. Hollywood Rose singer Axl Rose and rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin teamed up with L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns, bassist Ole Beich and drummer Rob Gardner. Folman was one of those soldiers, but nearly 20 years after the fact, his memories of that night remain particularly hazy. After hearing an old friend recall a vivid nightmare in which he is pursued by 26 ferocious dogs, Folman and his friend conclude that the dream must somehow relate to that fateful mission during the first Lebanon War.

The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli - Practical advice for crushing your enemies and fostering the loyalty of your underlings.

Nicolo Machiavelli knew well the vicissitude of a political career. The politics of Renaissance Italy were as complex as its art and as dangerous as the Old Masters were talented. Machiavelli enjoyed the high position of a Secretary within the Republic of Florence before crashing into disfavor with the return of Medici rule. After a brief if torturous session in prison, Machiavelli stuck to his love of scholarship and writing. A devoted student of history, he applied his knowledge and created the enduring work of political science known simply as The Prince. This work that seeks to advise a prince on how to successfully run his domain has a notorious reputation because of its stark acceptance of violence and deceit. Even the author’s name has spawned the word Machiavellian which is associated with craftiness and duplicity.... read more

Lake Vostok, Russian for “East,” is the biggest subglacial lake found underneath Antarctica. Andrey Kapitsa, as part of a Soviet expedition in 1959 and 1964, used seismic readings from the Soviet’s Vostok Station and theorized from his findings that there was a large, freshwater lake present underneath the ice. In 2005 there was an island in the middle of the lake discovered as well as two smaller, adjoining lakes. The documentary explores what the lake may be like and how it can inform our understanding of extraterrestrial life and what forms it can take. The lake is believed to exist because the extreme pressure of the ice above it acts like a blanket, trapping enough of the Earth’s heat to keep it in a liquid state.... read more

Romeo and Juliet is an orchestral work composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is styled an Overture-Fantasy, and is based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. Like other composers such as Berlioz and Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky was deeply inspired by Shakespeare and wrote works based on The Tempest and Hamlet as well. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, Romeo and Juliet does not have an opus number.

Some of these are among the most popular concert and theatrical music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, which he bolstered with appearances as a guest conductor later in his career in Europe and the United States. One of these appearances was at the inaugural concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1891. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884 by Tsar Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension in the late 1880s.... read more

Anticipation is building in the run-up to presentations of the best-yet evidence for - or against - the existence of the Higgs boson. The famed particle is a missing link in current theories of physics, used to explain how things gains their mass. Rumours have been swirling about the findings for weeks, ahead of the announcement on Tuesday afternoon. It is likely to yield only tantalising hints, as the teams do not have enough data to claim a formal discovery. However, most physicists concede that not finding the Higgs boson is as exciting a prospect as finding it in the place where existing theory predicts it should be. "If we wouldn't find it it would be even - in a way - more exciting, but you know, both ways, it's a win-win situation," said Prof Stefan Soldner-Rembold, a particle physicist from the University of Manchester. "[If] we find it, we know this theory's complete, but there's still more things to look for.... read more
